Digital Rich

I’m Richard Almond, a 22 year old Architecture student from Newcastle upon Tyne. After completing my first degree in Architecture in my home town, I moved to London to pursue my ambition of working for one of the capital’s top practices. I managed to secure a position at Dixon Jones Architects which allowed me a hugely valuable insight into daily life in a top practice. After soon coming to love London, it seemed unthinkable to spend only one short year in the capital, and therefore I decided to extend my time here, taking advantage of the world-class educational facilities. I pondered working in practice for another year but felt I’d like something different, something that may give me an advantage in both part 2 and in practice. After researching the various MA degrees offered by the London Universities I came across the  MA in Architecture + Digital Media at the University of Westminster. The course looks at the increasing influence digital technology has on the world of architecture, and covers topics which hold great interest for me, but which part 1 + 2 often struggle to accommodate, such as Photography, Graphical Representation, Scripting, Parametric Design, Rapid Prototyping, Interface/Interactivity and Animation. The course essentially strives to acquire a deep working knowledge of the computer as a design tool and an understanding of the various methods in which it can be used to aid the design process. I enrolled onto the course in September 2008 and am currently working towards my major thesis project. My eyes have been truly opened to the career possibilities with an architectural education. It has been a relief to learn that I don’t necessarily need to spend a large portion of my working life drawing RCP’s in a quiet office, and I’ve been incredibly impressed by the exciting work shown to me by tutors and guest lecturers, much of which straddles disciplines between architecture, design, installation, interactivity and art.
