intended boat provisions
February 13th, 2011 | Richard Almond
After a good amount of research and much advice from a number of people far more knowledgeable about sailing than myself, I decided to try to define the boat classes that my academy would aim to provide. The academy would offer a range of classes to suit various sailing abilities, from the single-seater Optimist to the 1-2 man Laser, the 3-4 man Knarr and the Clipper class.
The Optimist class is where most sailors learn the basics, these small dinghies are easy to handle for beginners and are light enough to be moved around by hand. The next step is the slightly larger Laser class, one of the most popular of the racing classes and used in Olympic sailing, these dinghies are also fairly light and portable. As mentioned in a previous post, the Knarr will be provided for, establishing Reykjavik as one of only 4 worldwide hubs for this traditional Scandinavian class. Each Knarr regatta venue provides its own fleet for visiting sailors. Finally, the largest class that will be provided for is the Clipper 68, to allow training for the Round the World Yacht Race.
